CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

My ‘Welcome’ letter was originally written on a baking hot day in July 2020 after having experienced the worst pandemic in a hundred years! Covid-19 drew our Festival 2020 to a sudden halt on 8th March having started on 1st February. All classes apart from Choirs took place and sadly our Festival Concert had to be cancelled. It was a difficult decision to cancel but we all realise with hindsight this was the right decision to make as time has proved. However, Covid-19 is still with us sadly.

As a committee we have had to consider how to run our Festival 2021 and to start with we had hoped to run it ‘Live’ as usual. However as time has passed we realised that this was not possible with many changes to Government regulations. On investigating the way ahead we all agreed the best way forward would be to go ‘Virtual’ and we feel extremely confident that this will be successful. It is an opportunity for candidates and teachers alike to work towards rehearsing pieces in the usual way and then supplying a video to include for adjudication by our British Federation adjudicators with the usual report and certificate. All procedures will be on our website and if there are any queries please contact your section leaders or our General Secretary, Mary Smith. It will be a learning curve for us all so please bear with us but having heard about other festivals using the on-line method I am confident that it will work successfully this year for Chichester!

Please read through our syllabus on our website. Some changes have had to be made to some classes to adapt to being virtual without losing the Festival altogether this year. There have been some changes to the committee also since holding our Zoom AGM on 10th June. We welcome Christopher Johnston who will join Janet Topping as leaders of the Pianoforte section. They have taken over from Alison Blenkinsop who did a stirling job over two years and we thank her for her hard work and kindness. We also welcome Sue Bethel who will be joining the Dance committee headed by Angela Watkins as Section Leader.

After all considerations it will be a challenge to go ‘Virtual’ this year but I am thrilled that we have a Festival 2021 taking place and thank all those who have given up their time to “get the show on the road”! I wish all candidates a wonderful experience.

Kind regards and keep safe.
